Are you finding yourself overwhelmed looking at bath time products for your new baby and wondering what products you really actually need? Not to mention what products are safe for baby’s sensitive skin? I have totally been there, and it can be super confusing! Now I am not here to offer any medical advice by any means, but my son has really sensitive skin and it was a journey finding good skincare and bath products that actually worked for his skin. If you’re in the same boat, or are just wondering what products are really worth it to purchase for your baby, I’ve got you covered in this blog post. Keep reading to dive into the best bath time essentials that you’ll actually use!
This post is all about best baby bath products.
1. A Bathtub That Grows with Baby.
One of the most important first products to buy for bath time is (duh) an actual bathtub. It’s important to buy one that will be able to grow with baby at least for the first 0-6 months until they are able to sit up in a bigger bathtub. For newborns, I highly recommend the Angel Care Baby Bath Tub. It’s totally nonslip and really easy to keep clean. As baby gets bigger, this Boon 3 Stage Bath Tub has a middle section you can flip once baby is able to fully sit up and can stay in this until they are fully out of baby bathtubs and sitting in the actual tub.
2. Gentle Baby Wash.
This is key for babies with sensitive skin. There are a lot of products out there, but my two favorites are the Aquaphor Baby Wash and the Pipette Baby Shampoo + Wash brand from Target. Both are non-scented and great for babies with sensitive skin.
3. A Cozy Hooded Towel.
You definitely want your baby to be comfortable when getting out of the bath, and a cozy hooded towel is an absolute must (bonus points if you want to be extra and throw the towel in the dryer before baby gets out of the bath, but that’s totally not necessary). I personally like investing in a more expensive towel, like the Little Giraffe brand, because these towels literally last forever. My son is almost two and he still has the same towel he was using as a newborn. If you’re more budget-conscious, this KeaBabies Bamboo Hooded towel also has great reviews.
4. Bath Thermometer.
Not entirely a must, but the anxious mom in me really liked having a bath thermometer especially when my son was a newborn just to be totally sure the bath was at the appropriate temperature. This duck bath thermometer works great and is a fun little toy as your baby gets older too!
5. Muslin Washcloths.
Muslin washcloths are a great option for baby, since sometimes the washcloths we use as adults are not quite as soft on their very delicate skin. They also hold up really well in the wash and are great to use for spills, and other clean ups – not just for bath time! This pack of muslin washcloths from Amazon will last you forever and has great reviews.
6. Lotion for Sensitive Skin.
Just like with baby wash, you’ll definitely want to invest in a good lotion that’s non-scented for baby. Eucerin baby lotion is highly recommended by a lot of pediatricians, and is the same lotion we’ve used on my son since he was born. Again, I also really like the Pipette baby lotion from Target as another clean option.
7. All-Over Ointment.
Tubby Todd All-Over Ointment absolutely wins the game for skin protectants. The reviews speak for themselves, but this is a really great, clean brand. I highly recommend any of their products. This ointment is great to use when baby is having any particular skin flare-ups, like baby acne or pacifier rashes. I like to put this on first, then let it air dry and add some Aquaphor on top to help act as a barrier to keep the moisture in.
8. Nail Grinder.
If you’re an anxious mama like me, nail clippers totally freak you out. I was terrified of cutting my son’s finger while cutting his nails, so I have only ever used a nail grinder (like I said earlier, he’s almost two, and I still use this same one). The Momcozy electric nail file has multiple attachments so you can use the really sensitive one when baby is teeny tiny and then move up in coarseness as baby gets a little older and their nails get a little tougher. This is a definite must for any newborn.
9. Soft Hairbrush or Comb.
Finally, it is important to invest in a nice soft bristle hairbrush or comb for baby. I would recommend using a hairbrush until baby is a little older and their soft spot on their head has closed before using a comb on their hair. Haaka has a really nice, soft bristle hairbrush and comb combination set. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, Safety First has a great similar set. I’ve used both and like them equally!
Hopefully this list will help you to not feel so overwhelmed by the million different types of baby bath products out there. Once you have your routine down with these simple essentials, you’ll be a bath pro in no time and might one day even say that bath is your favorite time of the day!
